The measurement of the diameter is performed according to the “three points” technique, without the complete wheel coverage.
The measurement method is based on the diameter calculation by the known length of the segment chord (the distance between the ball bearings centers), which is obtained at placing the gauge onto the wheel. The suggita of the segment is measured by means of the displacement converter.

A wheel diameter measuring gauge is a precision measuring instrument designed to determine the rolling circle diameter of railway wheels during inspection and maintenance of rolling stock.
Railway wheel diameter measurement is required to monitor wheel wear, verify wheel condition, and maintain safe operation of locomotives, passenger trains, freight wagons, and other rail vehicles.
Unlike conventional measuring methods that require wheelset removal, an electronic wheel diameter gauge allows operators to perform measurements directly on the installed wheelset.
A railway wheel diameter gauge measures wheel diameter using the three-point measurement technique.
The gauge is placed on the wheel surface using ball bearing supports. The distance between the support points forms a known chord of the wheel segment. The displacement sensor measures the sagitta of this segment, and the instrument calculates the wheel diameter based on the obtained geometric parameters.
This measurement principle allows accurate rail wheel diameter measurement without complete wheel coverage.
Yes. A wheel diameter measuring gauge allows operators to measure railway wheel diameter directly on rolling stock without wheelset roll-out.
This reduces inspection time and simplifies maintenance procedures because the wheelset does not need to be removed from the vehicle for measurement.
The digital wheel diameter gauge provides measurement accuracy of ±0.2 mm.
The measurement resolution can be configured as 0.1 mm, 0.01 mm, or 0.01 inch depending on the required measurement format.
This accuracy allows the instrument to be used for railway wheel wear monitoring and dimensional inspection.
A railway wheel diameter gauge can be configured for different wheel sizes.
The standard measurement range is 400–1400 mm. Different base configurations allow measurements of various wheel diameters:
- 122 mm base: 400–750 mm wheel diameter range;
- 200 mm base: 400–950 mm wheel diameter range;
- 250 mm base: 600–1400 mm wheel diameter range;
- 300 mm base: 720–1400 mm wheel diameter range.
Custom measurement ranges are available according to application requirements.
A wheel diameter gauge can be used for train wheel diameter measurement on different types of rolling stock, including:
- locomotives;
- passenger railway vehicles;
- freight wagons;
- other rail vehicles with compatible wheel dimensions.
The gauge configuration can be selected according to the required wheel diameter range.
A wheel diameter gauge is designed to measure the rolling circle diameter of a railway wheel.
A wheel gauge or wheel gauge measurement usually refers to other railway geometry parameters, such as wheelset spacing or distance-related measurements. These are different measurement tasks and require different instruments.
The main difference is the method of transferring measurement results.
A standard electronic wheel diameter gauge displays the measured value directly on the built-in digital indicator.
A Bluetooth version allows measurement results to be transferred wirelessly to a PDA or computer for saving and further processing in a wheelset wear database.
Yes. Models with Bluetooth communication can transfer measurement results to a PDA or PC-based database management system.
Digital storage of railway wheel diameter measurements allows operators to keep inspection records and track wheel wear changes over time.
The three-point measurement method determines the diameter of a circular surface from two known parameters:
- the chord length between two contact points;
- the measured sagitta of the wheel segment.
The gauge measures these values directly on the wheel and calculates the corresponding diameter without requiring full wheel circumference measurement.
Calibration is performed using reference calibration tools and dedicated reference blocks.
Regular calibration ensures that the measuring gauge maintains the specified accuracy during railway wheel inspection.
The correct wheel diameter gauge configuration depends on:
- railway wheel diameter range;
- rolling stock type;
- required measurement base;
- need for digital data transfer;
- integration with wheel wear monitoring systems.
The selected configuration should correspond to the dimensions of the wheels being inspected.
