Operator mounts the laser scanning module onto the wheel to be measured. Having received a command from PDA or PC, the laser module performs non-contact scanning of the wheel surface.
Measurement results (geometric parameters and profile of the surface) are displayed on PDA, can be saved in the PDA memory, and transferred to the PC database. Simultaneously, additional parameters can be saved: operator number, side identifier(left or right wheel), axisnumber, locomotive (carriage) number, wheel pair number, etc.

A railway wheel profile gauge — also known as a rail wheel profile gauge, rail wheel gauge, rail wheel measurement gauge, or laser wheel profilometer — is a laser-based instrument that measures the geometrical parameters of a railway wheel — flange height, flange thickness, flange slope, and rim (tire) thickness — and captures the full profile of the wheel roll surface. This type of railway wheel profile measurement, also referred to as train wheel profile measurement, is standard practice for wheelset wear monitoring and maintenance scheduling on locomotives, freight and passenger train wheels, metro and tramway rolling stock.
Yes. As a wheel gauge, the IKP-5 works as a laser profilometer for the wheel roll surface: it scans wheel surface without contact and reconstructs the full profile as a set of coordinate points, rather than only reporting individual dimensions.
The laser scanning module is mounted directly on the wheel using magnetic support plates. On command from the PDA or a PC, it performs an automatic, non-contact laser scan of the wheel surface, generating a full profile from 5800 measurement points with a formation discreteness of 0.025 mm, in an average of 4 seconds per measurement.
Measurement error is ±0.03 mm for flange height and flange thickness, and ±0.1 mm for flange slope and rim thickness, with an indication discreteness of 0.01 mm across all parameters.
Flange height: 5–45 mm. Flange thickness: 5–50 mm. Flange slope: 1–15 mm. Rim thickness: 36–100 mm on the standard IKP-5, 22–52 mm on the IKP-5-Short, and not measured on the IKP-5-Super-Short.
Yes. On the 2017 model, Wheel diameter is obtained by a calculation method within a range of 400–1400 mm, with a measurement error of ±0.1 mm, derived from the same laser scan used for flange and rim measurements — no separate diameter probe is required.
Yes. On the 2026 model of IKP-5 Standard, back-to-back distance is measured by inbuilt laser sensor — no separate back-to-back distance measurement gauge is required.
The three versions share identical measurement ranges and accuracy for flange height, thickness, and slope, and differ mainly in scanning module size and rim thickness coverage. The standard IKP-5 measures rim thickness up to 100 mm and suits mainline rail and locomotive wheels; the IKP-5-Short is built for tramway wheels with a shorter handle and a 22–52 mm rim thickness range; the IKP-5-Super-Short has the most compact scanning module and does not measure rim thickness, making it suited to tighter tramway wheel access.
Yes. The instrument is supplied with a database management system and PC software for storing and processing wheelset wear data, with PDA memory capacity for up to 100,000 measurements. Alongside geometric parameters, the system can log operator number, wheel side (left/right), axle number, vehicle number, and wheel set number for each measurement.
The laser scanning module and the digital readout device (PDA) communicate over Bluetooth, so measurements taken at the wheel are transmitted to the PDA in real time and can later be transferred to a PC database.
The standard IKP-5 scanning module runs on a 5400 mAh Li-ion battery rated for at least 5,000 measurements per charge, while the Short and Super-Short versions use a 2400 mAh battery rated for at least 2,200 measurements. The laser module itself is rated for 5 million measurement cycles over its service life.
The instrument operates across a temperature range of -30°C to +50°C and is available with an IP42 or IP62 enclosure rating, depending on configuration.
The order code follows the format IKP-V-M-S-T-R, where V sets the handle version (standard, Short, or SShort), M selects standard or reinforced magnets, S selects direct or inverted support plates for internal or external rim-face mounting, T indicates whether a rim measurement rod is included, and R sets the enclosure rating (IP42 by default, or IP64 as an option).
